Astris

About us

We’re a small independent publisher. We make the books we think deserve to exist, and we sell them ourselves.

Why we started

Big publishing increasingly decides what reaches you on the size of an author’s audience. A good manuscript from someone with no platform gets turned down. A weaker one from someone with a following gets a deal. Plenty of books worth reading die in that gap, and the joy of finding something new goes with them.

We started Astris to publish some of those books. We never ask how many followers an author has. We read the work.

What we publish

Fiction and non-fiction, with no walls between them. We don’t run imprints or genre lists, and we don’t much care which shelf a bookshop would put a title on. A novel, a collection of stories, an essay, a practical guide: if it’s good, we want it.

We sell direct rather than through a marketplace. Your book comes from us, your support comes from us, and if you want your money back you ask us rather than a middleman.

How we work

  • We read submissions ourselves. No follower count, no platform, no marketing plan. An author with no audience at all is welcome here.
  • You get a PDF, and an EPUB too where the book suits that format. Nothing is printed and nothing is shipped.
  • We edit every title before it goes out. If we revise a book you already own, we send you the new edition and don’t charge you for it.
  • Where a book deals with astrology, tarot, folklore or a similar tradition, we publish it as a cultural and interpretive work, for interest and for study rather than as prediction or advice.
